Compact & Lightweight Panasonic Lumix S 35mm F/1.8 Lens Announced

Panasonic has introduced a new Lumix S 35mm wide-angle fixed focal length lens with an f/1.8 large aperture for the Lumix S Series.

Panasonic has expanded the Lumix S Series range of lenses with the new Lumix S 35mm f/1.8 wide-angle lens which is the fourth fixed-focal-length lens to be introduced that’s based on the L-Mount system standard. 

The line-up now features an 85mm (S-S85), 50mm (S-S50), 24mm (S-S24) and the new 35mm (S-S35) which ePHOTOzine has been putting to the test over in reviews.

Panasonic is pleased to announce a new large-aperture wide fixed focal length lens, the LUMIX S 35mm F1.8 (S-S35).

The LUMIX S 35mm F1.8 comes as the fourth addition to the series of four fixed focal length, large-aperture F1.8 lenses based on the L-Mount system standard: 85mm (S-S85), 50mm (S-S50), 24mm (S-S24) and the new 35mm (S-S35). These lenses feature a common size and position of control parts to provide practical advantages in use, and the centre of gravity of these lenses is almost the same so that it is easy to exchange lenses quickly with minimum balance adjustment when the camera is on a gimbal. Common filters can also be used thanks to the same diameter, and the descriptive performance of these lenses is also consistent.

The LUMIX S 35mm F1.8 is comprised of eleven lens elements in nine groups including three aspherical lenses and three ED (Extra-Low Dispersion) lenses. The use of three aspherical lenses realises both high descriptive performance and beautiful bokeh, which are common advantages to the series of all F1.8 lenses. The ED lenses effectively suppress chromatic aberration. The lens can be used for versatile situations including landscapes and snapshots, taking advantage of the natural angle of view, as well as portrait. It can also be used for close-up shots as a result of the minimum focusing distance of 0.24m.

The LUMIX S 35mm F1.8 is capable of smooth, silent operation to work with the camera’s AF system with the sensor drive at max.240 fps. For the non-linear setting, focus is shifted with a variable amount according to the rotation speed of the focus ring while focus is shifted with a designated amount according to the rotational quantum of the focus ring for the linear setting. Sensitivity (the amount of focus shift per rotational quantum) can be selected from 90 to 360 degrees by 30 degrees to enable intended focus operation. The LUMIX S 35mm F1.8 also excels in video recording performance with a mechanism that suppresses focus breathing, which was a fatal problem of all interchangeable lenses designed for still image photography. Together with a micro-step aperture control for smooth exposure change, professional-quality video can be recorded.

With its approximately 295g compact size and lightweight, the LUMIX S 35mm F1.8 features stunning mobility to fit the S5, LUMIX’s smallest full-frame model. The rugged dust/splash-resistant design withstands use under harsh conditions even at 10 degrees Celsius below zero. The filter diameter is 67 mm, with a 9-blade circular aperture diaphragm.

Panasonic has clearly been giving much thought to their new range of light, reasonably priced prime lenses for the Lumix S full-frame system. The 24mm, 50mm and 85mm lenses are now joined by the 35mm, all matching in terms of size, weight, fast f/1.8 aperture and 67mm filter thread. The recently reviewed 24mm and 85mm lenses have been very impressive, being Highly Recommended and Editor’s Choice respectively. Now it is the turn of the Lumix 35mm f/1.8S, again coupled with the 24MP full-frame Panasonic Lumix S5 camera. Let’s see how it handles and performs and whether it can match up to its look-alike siblings.

This dust and splash resistant lens weighs in at a svelte 320g and matches up with the S5 body to give us a combination that is unusually light for a full-frame camera. It all balances well. As well as the weather resistance, the lens is also freeze-proof down to -10C.

The generously sized round lens hood bayonets securely into place and, like the other lenses in the quartet, now has the improved locking catch that does not have any tendency to become accidentally dislodged. Within the bayonet fit for the hood is a conventional 67mm filter thread, a consistent size across the range of four matching primes.

In terms of controls, we have utter simplicity. The electronic manual focusing ring is, as expected, as smooth as silk, and the AF/MF switch is self-explanatory. Focusing is down to 0.24m, or 0.79 feet, for a maximum magnification of 0.19x. This is usefully close. AF is snappy and accurate and has no difficulty locking on to almost any subject. Accuracy when focusing on the eyes is excellent. The focusing ring is active in AF and can be used to tweak the focusing point after AF has locked on. In MF the camera switches in focusing magnification that is very positive and easy to control and magnify from 0.1x to 1.0x. It works well.

The Leica L mount is substantially made and there is no play in the lens fit when seated. There is the usual gasket around the lens to ensure there is a good seal against water splashes.

Optical construction is 11 elements in 9 groups, including 3 Aspherical and 3 ED (Extra-Low Dispersion). The diaphragm comprises 9 blades giving a circular aperture to enhance the bokeh of the lens.

35mm lenses are, in full-frame terms, a “wide standard” and have always commanded a keen following with those photographers who feel the 50mm lens is too tight. So groups portraits may be easier, depth of field is slightly greater and we have the possibly ideal lens for reportage/street photography. Corrections are expected to be of a high order. Subject matter suitable for such lenses extends from environmental portraits to architecture, landscape, still life and, as mentioned, street photography. With the fast AF provided here, the Lumix 35mm f/1.8S is a very reliable companion for a wide range of styles and subjects.

First look: Panasonic S 35mm f/1.8 for L-mount

A year ago, Panasonic updated its L-mount lens roadmap to include a quartet of bright f/1.8 prime lenses, three of which—the 24mm, 50mm and 85mm—have since hit the market. Today it continues the rapid build-out of this lens lineup with the debut of the last of those previously-teased primes, the Panasonic Lumix S 35mm f/1.8. And for good measure, Panasonic also revealed that one more f/1.8 prime is on its way.

Who’s it for

With the full-frame sensors typical of most L-mount bodies, the Panasonic S 35mm f/1.8 is a standard wide-angle lens that’s best-suited to landscape, street photography, or even environmental portraiture. Pair it with an APS-C body or a full-frame body in “crop mode”, though, and it’s effectively a 50mm normal lens that’s still conducive to street photography, but also to full-length or waist-up portraits. It should also provide decent close-up possibilities with good subject separation, so long as you don’t mind being right on top of your subjects.

But while it should make for a capable stills lens, it’s movies that are really the 35mm f/1.8’s forte, just as with its other f/1.8 siblings. All four lenses in the quartet (and soon-to-be-quintet) are not only designed to be conducive to video capture, but also to shooting on a gimbal and pulling focus manually. Panasonic hasn’t aimed to keep size to a minimum with these lenses, but rather to provide the exact same balance and shooting experience regardless of which focal length you’re using.

Optical design

The Panasonic S 35mm f/1.8 features 11 individual lens elements in nine groups and forgoes the alphabet salad of exotic glass types used by some lenses, taming optical defects like chromatic aberration with three aspheric elements and three extra-low dispersion (ED) elements.

It forgoes optical image stabilization, but being a wide-angle lens and a fairly bright one at that, it’s not likely to be a big deal. (And with Leica SL-series or Panasonic DC-S-series bodies you can rely on the in-body stabilization instead, should you really need it.)

Aperture

Nine-bladed apertures are found in all of Panasonic’s f/1.8 primes, and this one is no different. Though you’ll likely get even rounder bokeh from the 11-bladed aperture of the slightly brighter and more expensive Sigma 35mm f/1.4 DG DN Art for L-mount and E-mount bodies, especially once stopped down a bit.

Sony likewise opted for 11 blades in its E-mount 35mm f/1.8, which is the closest mirrorless rival to this lens—albeit on a competing mount—leaving Panasonic behind a bit on paper. But nine blades should be sufficient to provide attractive bokeh regardless.

Again demonstrating Panasonic’s emphasis on videography for its f/1.8 primes, the Panasonic S 35mm f/1.8 includes a micro-stepping aperture control that allows for aperture changes during video capture without sudden and distracting shifts in exposure.

As for the minimum aperture, you’ll be able to stop down to f/22.

Autofocus

Panasonic has yet to identify what the autofocus drive mechanism for this lens is, but if it’s like its siblings, we expect it to use a swift linear motor. The company promises smooth, silent operation and says that this new lens is compatible with its high-performance contrast-detection AF algorithms, which can function at up to a maximum of 240 frames per second.

In another tip of the hat to videography, the lens is capable of repeatable manual focus pulls. In fact, it offers both non-linear focus control as well as a configurable linear control mode. With non-linear control, the lens shifts focus further for a given amount of rotation if you turn the ring more quickly. With linear control, a certain amount of rotation will always result in a corresponding amount of change to the focus distance. (In this mode, you can choose the amount of rotation necessary for a full focus rack in 30-degree increments from 90 to 360 degrees.)

Focus breathing, where the focal length also changes somewhat during focus adjustments, is common in stills-oriented lenses, but a big no-no for videography. Not surprisingly, Panasonic has worked to suppress it in this lens.

And if you want to get really, really close to your subject, the Panasonic S 35mm f/1.8 has a maximum magnification of 0.22x (1:4.5) from a distance of 9.5 inches (24cm).

Build quality

Although Panasonic has yet to detail its construction, we’d expect the 35mm f/1.8 to boast decent build quality but probably with some use of polycarbonate plastic to keep the weight down (at least if its build is similar to other f/1.8 primes in the series). The good news, though, is that like its siblings it offers a dust, splash and freeze-resistant design that includes weather seals throughout and allows use in temperatures from 14 to 104°F (-10 to 40°C).

When compared to its nearest rival, the full-frame E-mount Sony 35mm f/1.8, the Panasonic lens shows itself to be a bit chunkier. That’s because Panasonic’s priority wasn’t on minimizing the envelope, but on ensuring that all of its f/1.8 primes are the exact same size with an identical control layout and roughly the same center of gravity. This ensures both compatibility with follow focus systems for videographers who want to pull focus manually, as well as for gimbals that allow stable video with minimal adjustments when switching between lenses of differing focal lengths.

Still, with a diameter of 2.9 inches (7.4cm) and a length of 3.2 inches (8.2cm), it’s only a third of an inch (8-9mm) girthier and longer than its Sony rival. And the weight is actually pretty similar, at around 10.4 ounces (295g) without the included caps and lens hood, just a half-ounce (15g) more than the Sony.

Up front, you’ll find the exact same 67mm filter threads as Panasonic’s other f/1.8 primes. This lets you share the same filters across all four (and soon, five) lenses.

But wait, there’s more!

As we’ve hinted at a number of times in this article, although Panasonic is only officially introducing the 35mm S f/1.8 prime today, the brand has simultaneously taken the wraps off development of another optic. Previously shown on its November 2020 roadmap as a “large-aperture wide fixed focal length” lens, we now know that the next f/1.8 prime will be an 18mm ultra-wide angle. As for when to expect it, well… it took a year from the development announcement of the S 35mm f/1.8 to it being officially announced, so calibrate your excitement levels accordingly.

Panasonic has also announced new firmware for the Lumix S 24-105mm f/4, S Pro 70-200mm f/2.8, S Pro 70-200mm f/4 and S 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 lenses that will improve image stabilization during video capture, and increase the effective stabilization strength for the 24-105mm f/4 from 6.5 to 7.5 stops when using Dual I.S. 2 on the Lumix S1H, S1R or S1 bodies.

Price and availability

Available from the end of November 2021, the Panasonic Lumix S 35mm f/1.8 (model number: S-S35) will be priced at $699.99. By way of comparison, that’s about $50 less than the list price for Sony’s competing lens, making the Panasonic a rather good deal on paper—especially given its strong focus on movie capture, a niche that tends to come hand-in-hand with higher pricing.

Panasonic has officially announced the new Lumix S 35mm F1.8, the fourth S series lens in the range of fast primes planned by Panasonic. This lens joins the 24mm F1.8, 50mm F1.8, and 85mm F1.8 lenses which all offer a similar design and style, as well as being compact and lightweight.

Panasonic has also announced that development is underway for a new 18mm ultra-wide angle fixed focal length lens with F1.8 large aperture. We haven’t got any more information, other than this, but we will be sure to add more details when we get some.

In addition Panasonic has announced a number of firmware updates, designed to improve image stabilisation with some lenses and cameras, offering up to 7.5stops with the 24-105mm lens.

Firmware updates improve image stabilisation performance

Alongside the development of new lenses, firmware update programs*2 are also available for the conventional S-R70200, S-E70200, S-R70300 and S-R24105 lenses to improve the stability of Image Stabiliser during video recording. In addition, image stabilisation performance of Dual I.S. 2 has been increased from 6.5 stops to 7.5 stops*3 for photoshoots when the S-R24105 is mounted on the LUMIX S1H, S1R or S1.

This dust and splash resistant lens weighs in at a svelte 320g and matches up with the S5 body to give us a combination that is unusually light for a full-frame camera. It all balances well. As well as the weather resistance, the lens is also freeze-proof down to -10C.

The generously sized round lens hood bayonets securely into place and, like the other lenses in the quartet, now has the improved locking catch that does not have any tendency to become accidentally dislodged. Within the bayonet fit for the hood is a conventional 67mm filter thread, a consistent size across the range of four matching primes.

In terms of controls, we have utter simplicity. The electronic manual focusing ring is, as expected, as smooth as silk, and the AF/MF switch is self-explanatory. Focusing is down to 0.24m, or 0.79 feet, for a maximum magnification of 0.19x. This is usefully close. AF is snappy and accurate and has no difficulty locking on to almost any subject. Accuracy when focusing on the eyes is excellent. The focusing ring is active in AF and can be used to tweak the focusing point after AF has locked on. In MF the camera switches in focusing magnification that is very positive and easy to control and magnify from 0.1x to 1.0x. It works well.

The Leica L mount is substantially made and there is no play in the lens fit when seated. There is the usual gasket around the lens to ensure there is a good seal against water splashes.

Optical construction is 11 elements in 9 groups, including 3 Aspherical and 3 ED (Extra-Low Dispersion). The diaphragm comprises 9 blades giving a circular aperture to enhance the bokeh of the lens.

35mm lenses are, in full-frame terms, a “wide standard” and have always commanded a keen following with those photographers who feel the 50mm lens is too tight. So groups portraits may be easier, depth of field is slightly greater and we have the possibly ideal lens for reportage/street photography. Corrections are expected to be of a high order. Subject matter suitable for such lenses extends from environmental portraits to architecture, landscape, still life and, as mentioned, street photography. With the fast AF provided here, the Lumix 35mm f/1.8S is a very reliable companion for a wide range of styles and subjects.

Photogenic Supply is offering pint glasses that feature a genuine 35mm film canister permanently embedded into the glass. The company’s founder Pano Kalo says he collects the discarded cassettes from local film labs and then recycles them into what he calls “beautiful, durable hand-made pint glasses that celebrate a passion for film photography.”

Photogenic Supply was formerly known as TogTees, but changed its name as the company started offering a wider range of photography-inspired products beyond the casual clothing that it started out with back in 2017.

The company’s mantra says that as it is made up of photographers, they strive to capture the passion for photography through unique and original designs.

“We take the same approach in our photography and in our product design — never deliver something you’re not proud of,” the company says. “Your work is your reputation, and it’s always worth it to put in that extra hour to make sure it shines. That has been our philosophy since day one, and that is why we are proud to send our tees around the world.”

Photogenic Supply is based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and every product is designed by in-house artists. The compaby also works with local and domestic makers to create high-quality, long-lasting items that it hopes its customers will cherish for years.

Kalo says that that Photogenic Supply has been making the glasses in limited batches since late last year and that they are 100% made in the United States and are limited edition, as each glass is individually put together by hand and subject to what is described as an “extremely” limited supply. What film canister comes with each glass is also subject to what is available.

The glass is a 16-ounce (473 milliliters) pint glass and, as expected, hand washing is recommended. The glasses are available for $35 directly from the Photogenic Supply Company website or Etsy store.

In addition to a pint glass, Photogenic Supply also offers a whisky glass that also has a film canister embedded in it.

Voigtlander is one of the grand old names of German lens making, along with Zeiss and Rollei, and still exists today in its current incarnation of Cosina-owned Japanese manufacture. This brings modern design and manufacturing techniques to meet with traditional style lens design and materials, resulting in a very interesting range of manual focus lenses. The Voigtlander 35mm f/1.2 Nokton X is also a first of the range designed for Fuji X mount. Here we are using the 26MP Fujifilm X-S10 body to look in detail at the new lens and see if it has the potential to attract Fuji users, who already have a very fine range of AF and MF lenses available.

First impression is of a very nicely made metal-bodied lens, but more than that, a very tiny lens that is much more akin to a small Leica rangefinder lens than even a small DSLR prime. It weighs in at just 196g. It definitely looks the part on the Fujifilm X-S10, balancing perfectly with the camera body.

There is a tiny metal screw-in lens hood and this offers a small amount of protection to the front element. The filter size is 46mm, again more typical of a small rangefinder style lens.

The aperture ring is at the front of the lens and has a nice ribbed grip, all around apart from the area where the aperture values are etched and filled with clear white paint. The click stops cannot be switched off. They are however beautifully engineered, at one-third of a stop intervals. The direction of travel is the same as Nikon and Pentax DSLRs.

The manual focus ring, and of course there is no AF with the Voigtlander lens range, operates smoothly and with a well-judged degree of firmness to the action. The direction of the focus ring is traditional Canon. Focus distances are marked in a very visible white for metres and a rather dull and much harder to see red for feet. Focusing is down to 0.30m, or 1 foot, exactly what we would expect from a classic 35mm lens. Behind the manual focus ring is a well-marked and useful depth of field scale.

The metal lens mount is well-engineered and carries electronic contacts, so EXIF information can be shared with the camera body, providing it is one of the following, which are all compatible electronically: Х-Н1, Х-Т4, Х-Т3, Х-Т2, Х-Рrо3, Х-Ѕ10, Х-Е4, Х-Т30.

Optical construction is 8 elements in 6 groups. The diaphragm comprises a generous 12 blades, which suggests that bokeh could be very smooth.

So, in summary, we have a relatively tiny 35mm lens, designed specifically for the Fujifilm APS-C cameras. This is effectively equivalent to a 50mm standard lens on full-frame, certainly in terms of field of view. Add to that the bonus of a very fast, bright f/1.2 aperture and we have a very interesting proposition.

Manual focusing will not be for everyone, and at f/1.2 it can indeed be a bit tricky to find that exact point of focus. One technique is to focus at open aperture and then close down before shooting, counting off the click stops so that the required aperture can be set without taking the camera from the eye. If on a tripod, then the screen can be used and it is easier to be precise, but slower. In bright light and/or at smaller apertures it may be possible to focus at the taking aperture, but probably not with any accuracy when the light begins to fade.

Apart from the advantage in low light and as an aid to focusing, the widest apertures also have a function that depends upon the basic lens design. Some lenses are designed to be relatively soft wide open and these can be very useful for softer effects with portraiture. At some point, they will crisp up and deliver high levels of sharpness for those who need it. Some lenses aim to be razor-sharp even wide open and these can be a bit cruelly sharp for portraits to appeal to the model. With this lens, the widest apertures are softer and there is some potential there for more flattering portraits. Standard lenses no longer seem to be regarded as too close for flattering images, so this could fit in very nicely with current perceptions.

Minox, most notably known for producing ultra-compact spy cameras, as well as compact 35mm film cameras, have somewhat of a cult following, as they keep popping up at photography shows, be it Photokina, or The Photography Show.

MSHobbies are showing a wide range of Minox cameras at The Photography Show 2021, including the ultra compact spy cameras with a special gold edition, and a range of 35mm film cameras.

They’re also showing a number of Minox lenses taken from the 35mm camera, such as the 35 GT, and the Minox color minotar 35mm f2.8 lens has been adapted for use on Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras, such as the Sony Alpha A7 series. The lens with custom made adapter is available for £179.99, but on offer at The Photography Show. Each adapter has to be specially made and calibrated due to Minox altering the lens setup throughout the manufacturing period.

The MSH Sony E-mount adapter for color minotar 35mm F2.8 lens comes ready to use, so you don’t have to worry about breaking anything if you were thinking of trying to “Do It Yourself”. A process that M.S.Hobbies owner, Paul O’Sullivan, says is more complicated due to the lens originally having a built-in leaf shutter, as well as light meters. Paul says that the lens works the best on Sony E-Mount, but that people have requested other lens mount conversions as well.
