Amazon Wants You To Test its Ring Flying Indoor Drone Camera

Amazon Wants You To Test its Ring Flying Indoor Drone Camera

Amazon Wants You To Test its Ring Flying Indoor Drone Camera 2

Amazon first announced the Ring Always Home Cam almost a year ago during its 2020 hardware event, but today it confirmed that the product is real and can be purchased… by invitation only.

The Ring Always Home Cam is pretty basic as far as a concept goes: it’s a small camera attached to a drone that works with the Ring network. The idea is that rather than being required to set up a host of cameras all around a home so that every angle can be captured, the Home Cam would instead allow users to take a quick perusal of the house through the flying indoor camera.

Ring — which Amazon purchased in 2018 — even bills it as a way for someone to be in “two places at once.”

Amazon says the indoor flying camera as equipped with navigation sensors so that it can navigate the paths of a home without crashing and allows users to get a “flexible point of view” when they are not in the house. Fully autonomous, it can’t actually be “flown” in the traditional sense of the word, but simply commanded to run pre-determined paths. It is able to stream and record video in Full HD 1080p that is watchable via the Ring app. It can be triggered by a Ring Alam sensor or manually through the app.

Amazon Wants You To Test its Ring Flying Indoor Drone Camera 3

The camera unit itself is blocked when it’s not in use, as it sits at the base of a column below the propellers which fits into its charging station like a sword in a sheath. The idea behind this design choice is that instead of having a set of cameras always watching a family while they are home, the flying camera can provide the same level of visibility but only when the family is not present. Cats and dogs, however, are unlikely to be fans of it.

Additionally, it can’t navigate stairs and the battery life is extremely short: about five minutes. Ring says this is because the idea of the drone is not to have it patrol an area for a long time, but rather it is designed to be deployed tactically to investigate specific situations.

According to The Verge, the Always Home Cam has been in testing since it was announced last year in order to make sure that it doesn’t run amok and cause damage to itself or its surroundings, especially since it is supposed to operate with no nearby supervision.

Amazon Wants You To Test its Ring Flying Indoor Drone Camera 4

Ring’s founder says the company has made multiple refinements to it in the last year and now it’s ready to be tested in actual people’s homes. Well, some people’s: the drone can only currently be purchased if a buyer is selected for the invite-only test program.

“I have it in my home, and it does work,” Jamie Siminoff, Ring’s founder, says. “But today’s homes are so unique, so we really need to get it into more customers’ homes to make sure everything we are doing is right.”

The idea is that whoever signs up for the program will work in tandem with Ring to finalize the product and prepare it for more widespread distribution. Interested parties can sign up for an invitation to buy a Ring Always Home Cam for $250.

Amazon ‘Fixes’ Overpricing New Canon Lens by Increasing Price Further

Amazon 'Fixes' Overpricing New Canon Lens by Increasing Price Further

Amazon 'Fixes' Overpricing New Canon Lens by Increasing Price Further 5

Amazon is dealing with an apparent pricing error involving a Canon RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1 lens. While the MSRP is $2,800, Amazon had it listed for over $600 more. Once made aware, the company “fixed” it: it’s now listed for $1,600 more than MSRP.

Early this morning, PetaPixel was made aware of a pricing issue involving the Canon RF 100-500mm lens. The official “shipped and sold by Amazon” version of the lens — not a third-party independent reseller, as can be seen by the “Ships from and sold by Amazon.com” notation — was listed for $3,443.97. To make matters worse, the lens is currently on backorder through other authorized resellers, which makes Amazon one of the few places through which new, official versions of the lens can currently be purchased.

Amazon 'Fixes' Overpricing New Canon Lens by Increasing Price Further 6

Believing the pricing discrepancy to be some kind of error, PetaPixel informed Canon so that Amazon could be made aware of the problem and resolve it. While PetaPixel is not aware of the exact agreements Canon has with its resellers, it is very likely that the company prohibits inflating the value of its items beyond the “suggested” retail price.

The FTC protects this practice for companies who want to maintain control over the price of their items:

If a manufacturer, on its own, adopts a policy regarding a desired level of prices, the law allows the manufacturer to deal only with retailers who agree to that policy. A manufacturer also may stop dealing with a retailer that does not follow its resale price policy. That is, a manufacturer can implement a dealer policy on a “take it or leave it” basis.

While this usually means that resellers can’t sell an item for less than a suggested price, sometimes it also stipulates that the price can’t be increased beyond a certain amount as well.

Whatever the case, a few hours later Amazon did make an amendment to the price of the lens, but not in the way that would be anticipated:

Amazon 'Fixes' Overpricing New Canon Lens by Increasing Price Further 7

Instead of lowering the price to the $2,800 retail price that other distributors sell the lens for, Amazon seems to have made another error and instead increased it to a whopping $4,400 — a $1,600 premium over the MSRP.

While clearly another mistake of some kind, this current price for the lens is far more than its actual value and buyers should probably wait for Amazon to bring the price of the lens down to the correct amount before trying to pick it up.

Amazon to Open Its Own Department Stores: Report

Amazon to Open Its Own Department Stores: Report

Amazon to Open Its Own Department Stores: Report 8

Amazon is reportedly planning to start opening large physical retail stores in the United States that will be its version of department stores.

The Wall Street Journal is reporting, based on anonymous sources familiar with the matter, that Amazon is expanding heavily into brick-and-mortar retail to increase its reach in sales of all kinds of products, including electronics.

Locations for the first Amazon department stores will likely be in California and Ohio, with each store occupying around 30,000 square feet. By comparison, a drug store is usually 15,000 square feet, grocery stores are 30,000 square feet, Walmart Supercenters are around 200,000 square feet, and department stores range from 100,000 to 250,000 square feet.

In addition to top consumer brands, Amazon’s department stores will presumably also heavily promote the company’s private label products. Sources tell the WSJ that Amazon aims to gather more data on customers as well as expose them to products they wouldn’t ordinarily search online for.

Since its founding back in 1994, Amazon has grown to become the 800-pound gorilla of online retail shopping in the United States. The New York Times reported this week that Amazon has just unseated the biggest brick-and-mortar retailer in the country — consumers now spend more money at Amazon than they do at Walmart.

As Amazon has ascended, sales have evaporated from many brick-and-mortar retail stores — especially specialty ones — forcing locations to close and companies to go bankrupt. Camera stores, in particular, have been closing left and right in recent years as customers opt to use them for hands-on time with cameras equipment to make a decision before purchasing for a lower price on Amazon.

Brick-and-mortar stores have tried different tactics to reduce “showrooming”, as it’s now called. Some have started charging a “just-looking” fee while larger stores that can compete more closely with Amazon in the area of margins (e.g. Best Buy) have allowed customers to price match Amazon.

After years of taking sales from physical stores and killing off many of them, Amazon is now ramping up its offensive by bringing the fight to their home turf, which doesn’t bode well for retailers that are already treading water and struggling to stay relevant in today’s online shopping world.

If Amazon’s upcoming department stores catch on, we could see even more mom-and-pop camera stores close as photographers turn to their local Amazon stores to both handle camera gear and purchase them without the delay of shipping.

Amazon seems to be far along in its plans to launch these new physical stores, but the WSJ notes that these plans aren’t final yet and could still change.

Camera Stabilizer Amazon Prime Day Deals

The Crane 2S gimbal

See our main Prime Day coverage here for PopPhoto and PopSci.

By now, you’ve seen a million different Amazon Prime Day deals. If you’re like me, you’ve probably bought at least one thing you’d never otherwise even consider purchasing. (Am I really an Instant Pot person now?) And while you shouldn’t plan to get huge deals on most photo gear, Zhiyun camera stabilizers are currently experiencing some serious price cuts.

What’s a camera stabilizer?

Technically, we’re talking about gimbals. They’re motorized camera mounts that use motors and internal motion sensors to counteract your camera’ s movements for silky smooth video. If you’ve ever used a drone, its camera used a gimbal to keep steady as it flew through the air.

Full-sized camera stabilizers can handle much more weight and often also include some extra features, including the ability to create moving time-lapses in which the camera rotates at a steady rate. It’s a very cool effect and useful even if you’re not a huge video shooter.

If you don’t shoot a lot of motion, there’s a good chance your DSLR or mirrorless camera has some advanced video features you’re missing out on. Even the clearest, sharpest footage looks bad when it’s shaky, though, which is why you’ll want a stabilizer, especially when you’re on the move.

Zhiyun’s Amazon Prime Day Sales

You’re forgiven if you’ve never heard of Zhiyun. But, the company is one of the biggest gimbal producers in the world. Its product range extends from cheap, basic models built for smartphones all the way up to pro-grade rigs that can hold a full-sized pro DSLR like the Canon 1D X Mark III.

The Smooth X gimbal, for example, is only $50 on Prime Day. It’s adjustable to hold pretty much any smartphone and extends out to 10 inches in length so you can shoot in seflie mode for your walk-and-talk YouTube videos. You can step up to the $99 (regularly $120) Smooth 4, which offers considerably more control through the pro-grade smartphone video app, Filmic Pro.

If you want to support your main camera, you’ll have to step up to something more advanced. The $250 Crane 2 is $50 off today and it supports up to 7.7 pounds of camera gear. A suite of buttons and an OLED display allow shooters to control the camera as well as the gimbal’s movement directly from the Crane 2 itself.

The $399 Crane 2S (regularly $499) might be the best bet if you’re hoping to grow your video shooting into a business. It has nice upgrades, like a carbon fiber handle. But, it also allows for more flexibility. You can shoot in a variety of different configurations depending on how you set it up. If you want to keep the gimbal low for a tracking shot, for instance, switch the handle to the top of the device.

If you’re looking to hop all the way into the camera stabilizer life, you the top-end Crane S3 is down to $559 all the way from $739 here on Prime Day. It’s built for big cameras up to 14 pounds, and the camera platform is wide enough to support full-fledged cinema rigs. It’s a truly professional piece of kit that will last for a long time.
