New gear: Fujifilm Instax Mini Evo Hybrid

The new Fujifilm Instax Mini Evo Hybrid

Fujifilm has unveiled its latest instant camera, the Instax Mini Evo Hybrid. Unlike most Fujfilm Instax models, this one combines a digital sensor with analog printing capabilities. The pairing allows users to store, edit, and select which shots they want to print. The camera uses the brand’s Instax Mini format film, which costs around $0.75 a shot if you buy it in multipacks.

This isn’t Instax’s first foray into the realm of hybrid cameras. The Instax LiPlay also combines a digital sensor with analog printing capabilities. But the Mini Evo Hybrid has a lot more features to offer in terms of creative photography. Let’s take a closer look at how it stacks up against our other favorite instant cameras.

Mini Evo Hybrid features

The Mini Evo Hybrid includes 10 integrated “lenses” and 10 “film effects”, giving photographers a lot of creative options when they shoot. The available lens effects include “Normal,” “Vignette,” “Soft Focus,” “Blur,” “Fisheye,” “Color Shift,” “Light Leak,” “Mirror,” “Double Exposure,” and “Half-Frame”. In terms of film effects, shooters can choose from “Normal,” “Vivid,” “Pale,” “Canvas,” “Monochrome,” “Sepia,” “Yellow,” “Red,” “Blue,” and “Retro”.

Most of these effects are pretty self-explanatory. But if you want a closer look, the video above does a good job showing off examples of quite a few. The Double Exposure, Half-Frame, and Light Leak effects in particular look fun. It’s also cool to see that you can combine film and lens effects, for added creative potential.

Storage and battery life

Internally, the Mini Evo Hybrid can store up to 45 shots. But users can expand storage via a microSD card slot. In addition to saving photos on the camera itself, you will also be able to send them directly to your smartphone or smart device via Bluetooth using the Mini Evo app. The app also offers remote shooting options.

In terms of power, a built-in Lithium-Ion battery should allow you to print about 100 images per charge, according to Fujifilm.

Camera design

The rear of the camera offers a 3-inch LCD. Fujifilm

The unit has a stylish vintage look with its black “leatherette” and silver accents. It even has an adorable “film advance” lever, used for making prints. The 3-inch LCD screen on the back of the camera lets photographers select shots, add creative frames and make small edits to their images before they print. There is one odd omission, though: The camera doesn’t have Instax’s classic selfie mirror on the front of the camera lens.

Price and availability

The Mini Evo Hybrid will launch alongside a new Instax film line called Instax Mini Stone Gray, which features a gray border instead of the traditional white one. The Instax Mini Evo Hybrid will be available in February 2022 for $199.95. The new film stock will also be available in February 2022 for $14.99 per pack.

We loved working with Instax’s last hybrid Instant camera and look forward to getting the Mini Evo Hybrid in our hands in the new year.

Autel Launches EVO Lite and Nano Drones to Compete with DJI

Autel Launches EVO Lite and Nano Drones to Compete with DJI

Autel has launched its new EVO Nano and EVO Light drones, which are aimed at competing with DJI’s line of compact, lightweight drones. Autel is perhaps the most direct rival DJI has in the consumer drone space, and that rivalry just got a bit more intense.

First up is the EVO Nano, with its notable 249-gram weight, which falls below the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) 250-gram threshold. Drones above that weight must be registered with the FAA in the U.S. This is the same lightweight category currently dominated by the DJI Mavic Mini 2, against which the EVO Nano possesses a few notable advantages. For one, it features three-way obstacle avoidance, which is a unique innovation in a drone weighing less than 250 grams.

Another advantage the Nano drones have is in its cameras: A 50MP 1/1.28-inch camera sensor in the Nano+, or a ½-inch 48MP sensor in the Nano. Both cameras easily outstrip the much smaller 1/2.3-inch 12MP sensor found in the DJI Mavic Mini 2.

The EVO Nano drones are also equipped with 4K 30 frames per second (fps) video, and transmit live 2.7k video to the controller with a range up to 6.2 miles. These drones offer 28 minutes of flight time.

The EVO Lite drones are slightly bigger and heavier, but are much more powerful. The EVO Lite+ offers a larger 1-inch 20MP sensor that’s perfect for shooting in low light. It also cranks the UAV’s video capabilities up to 6K 30 fps for ultra-high-resolution filmmaking and offers a variable aperture of F2.8-F11. That variable aperture gives it an edge over the comparable DJI Air 2S.

Autel EVO Lite series.

The EVO Lite shares a camera with the EVO Nano+, and though this is a step down in terms of image quality from the EVO Lite+, it makes up for it with a 4-axis gimbal that allows you to flip the camera on its side and shoot vertical video for sharing on social media. The EVO Lite drones bump up the maximum range to 7.4 miles and offer 40 minutes of flight time.

These new drones come with all the automatic tracking and cinematic modes you’d expect in a modern consumer drone. They feature video game-style controllers that connect to your smartphone for video transmission and control.

The EVO Nano will retail for $649, with the Nano+ costing $799. The EVO Lite will set you back $1,149, and the EVO Lite+ will cost $1,249. Autel has not yet announced when these drones will be available for purchase.

It’s worth noting that these prices are significantly higher than comparable DJI drones. Though they offer some significant upgrades, it may be an uphill battle for Autel to win customers from DJI’s more affordable and recognizable lineup of drones. It’s great to see such fierce competition in the UAV space, which has for a long time been very one-sided in favor of DJI.

Autel Aims at DJI, Launches EVO Nano and EVO Lite Compact Drones 1

Autel Robotics has announced the EVO Nano and EVO Lite drones that are designed for beginner enthusiasts and compete directly against the DJI Mini 2 and Air 2S. In particular, the Nano is the first sub-250 gram drone to offer obstacle avoidance.

Autel Robotics might not be as household of a name as DJI, but the Seattle-based and China-owned company won a lawsuit against DJI in May of 2020 involving the design of its most recent run of quadcopters. Victory in that lawsuit may explain why Autel’s drones look remarkably similar to the ones DJI has been marketing and selling for years.

The Nano is armed with a 1/1.28-inch CMOS sensor that is capable of capturing 50-megapixel or a 1/2-inch sensor 48-megapixel photos (depending on model between the Nano and Nano+) and uses a large f/1.9 aperture to offer what Autel touts as superior noise reduction capability and the ability to operate in low light conditions. It is also capable of tracking subjects using a combination of phase and contrast detection autofocus, and the company also claims wide dynamic range that will show details in both highlights and shadows.

The Nano weighs 249-pounds and features three-way obstacle avoidance — a first for a sub-250 gram drone.

Additionally, it has a flight range with live video transmission of up to 6.2 miles, has a 30-minute flight time, and can shoot 4K video. It will be available in four colors: Autel Orange, Arctic White, Deep Space Gray, and Blazing Red

The EVO Lite offers the choice between a 1/1.28-inch sensor capable of 50-megapixel photos a one-inch CMOS sensor capable of 20-megapixel photos — either the Lite or Lite +. It is armed with Autel’s “intelligent moonlight algorithm” that it says allows the drone to capture crisp and vibrant details at night with low noise, even at high ISO settings. It also comes with an adjustable aperture with a range of f/2.8 through f/11 and is capable of capturing 4K HDR content and 6K video at up to 30 frames per second.

The Lite also has what Autel claims is the world’s first four-axis gimbal design that promises the ability to orient the camera sideways to capture vertical videos that would be specifically shared on mobile devices. The EVO Lite weighs 820 grams, but shares the same 6.2-mile transmission, 30-minute flight time, and three-way obstacle avoidance found in the Nano. It will be available in three colors: Autel Orange, Arctic White, and Deep Space Gray.

Both drones will, as expected, ship with various automatic modes for different cinematic motions that can be captured via an aerial perspecitive.

The EVO Nano will start at $649 while the Nano+ will cost $799. The EVO Lite series will start $1,149 while the Lite+ will cost $1,249. The availability of the drones was not clear, but expect them to come to market soon.

New 2021 microSD card lineup offers fast read/write speeds and Samsung’s six-proof protection.
Advanced microSD cards are ideal for a wide variety of uses, including mobile device memory expansion, 4K UHD video storage, action cameras and drones.

Samsung Electronics, the world leader in advanced memory technology, today unveiled its new PRO Plus microSD card and a redesigned and enhanced EVO Plus microSD card. Samsung provides customers a comprehensive offering for day-to-day and professional storage needs with a new lineup of microSDs that offer lightning-fast read and write speeds[1], increased durability and a wide variety of capacity options.

The new microSD cards are ideal for expanded mobile device storage and capturing high-quality photos, 4K Ultra HD (UHD) video[2] and other content on action cameras and drones – even in extreme conditions.

Offered with a 10-year limited warranty[5], the PRO Plus and EVO Plus microSDs thus enable users to store data without the worry of lack of space, while also providing confidence that the content is well protected.

Professionals and consumers of all kinds want memory cards that make it easy to save and retrieve data while also knowing that their valuable images and video files are protected,” said KyuYoung Lee, vice president of the Brand Product Biz Team at Samsung Electronics. “Samsung’s new suite of microSD cards offer the features and capabilities consumers and professionals need: faster speeds along with increased reliability and durability to deliver the ultra-high performance every user wants.

PRO Plus microSD cards, a new addition to Samsung’s microSD lineup, are designed for more discerning content creators, offering exceptional read and write speeds of up to 160MB/s and 120MB/s[6], respectively. The PRO Plus microSD cards will be available in 128GB, 256GB and 512GB capacities.

The EVO Plus microSD is designed to give casual users peace of mind by providing high reliability and stable performance during day-to-day use. It offers transfer speeds of up to 130MB/s[7], providing up to 1.3x faster sequential read speed when compared to the previous version. The EVO Plus microSD cards will be available in 64GB, 128GB, 256GB and 512GB capacities.

The PRO Plus and EVO Plus microSD cards, featuring a reimagined Blue Wave design that gives the cards a fresh new look, will be available early October. An SD adaptor will also be included with each microSD card to expand its usage across multiple devices.

The suggested started retai price for the Samsung EVO Plus range is £11.99 (64GB) and £24.99 (128GB) for the PRO Plus range.
