Initially, I wondered why this grand looking structure had not been maintained as it still has a roof, still has some glass in the windows, and doesn’t seem a total loss. Then I discovered that this is just the remains of the orangery and the massive structure that was Trentham Hall was demolished around 1910-1912. Do look it up because the whole of the building is an amazing contruction. Was an amazing construction, but there are plenty of images on Google.
There’s a great shot to be had looking down the arches from the top of the steps, but unfortunately a gate now blocks the way. Here’s what I managed to shoot a couple of days ago during out trip to Trentham Monkey Forest and Trentham Gardens.

We often go to Arley Hall, a favourite location. So much so that we always have a season ticket. Finding something new to photograph isn’t really a problem as there are so many varied locations within the estate. The we have the different seasons, different weather and of course different cameras and lenses. This week it was the Sony A7R III, fitted with the delightful Sony FE 24mm f/2.8G lens. A great combination!
Kirklinto Hall is near Carlisle and another place worth a photographic visit. It is under a slow restoration, so return visits every now and again may see some progression. Our visit was way back in 2018, so here are some pictures from then. Hopefully soon we will be back for an update!

Today we drove over to Arley Hall, taking advantage of our Season Tickets and trying to get a bit of walking exefcise. My project for today was to shoot some new images of Arley Hall with the K-3 II set to Monochrome. I wasn’t quite sure whether I would use these as black and white or make them sepia, but in the end I decided that the vintage looking sepia toning gave the most sympathetic approach to the hall and grounds. There’s no doubt in my mind that if mono is wanted then it’s far better to switch off the colour at the shooting stage. Then we think in monochrome rather than it being an afterthought. I’ve used all the pictures, albeit choosing the best of several of some shots, and they are all uncropped.
Another great place to keep in mind when we finally get around to being able to freely visit places again. Burton Agnes has the new hall, the old medieval hall and also the Church of St Martin. We visited when we were having our Pickering holiday, so that gives a Big Clue that we’re talking North Yorkshire.
So, let’s have a look at some newly processed images!
Somebody in the Church of St Martin has a sense of humour!
Many churches have all sorts of interesting old keyboards.
Burton Agnes Hall.
Flowers and trees abound in the gardens and surrounding woodland.
The house contains all sorts of treasures.
The basement of the old medieval hall.
My favourite shot of the day is this formally composed image of the swimming bath.
