Meet the new Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN Contemporary lens for Sony E-mount and Leica/Panasonic/Sigma L-mount APS-C mirrorless cameras. 

The “DC” in the name denotes that the lens is for crop sensors and the “DN’ indicates the lens is built for mirrorless bodies. It’s the brand’s fourth “DC DN” offering and the first zoom. It joins the 16mm F1.4 DC DN, 30mm F1.4 DC DN and 56mm F1.4 DC DN.

It’s also part of Sigma’s “Contemporary” line of glass. Lenses in this range tend to strike a nice balance between performance and compactness. 

Priced at $549 and offering a super-versatile 27-75mm equivalent focal range with a constant f/2.8 aperture, there’s seemingly much to like about the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8. Let’s have a closer look. 

Who it’s for?

The new Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 appears to be a good choice for a very wide range of photographic disciplines, including travel, street photography, landscapes, and portraits. Photographers should be able to get decent subject separation when shooting wide open at f/2.8. The lens should handle moderately low-light situations with ease. 

The Sigma 18-50mm is also impressively compact and lightweight. This coupled with its flexible zoom range makes it a tempting option as an everyday walkaround lens. 

For Sony E-mount shooters 

If you’re a user of any of Sony’s a6000 (or a5000) series cameras—including the a6000, a6100, a6300, a6400, a6500 or a6600—you’ve probably noticed there aren’t a lot of standard zooms with constant apertures out there (made specifically for APS-C). In fact, Sony’s own 16-55mm f/2.8 G is one of only two options. But it’s pricy at $1400. 

The other option For Sony APS-C users is the Tamron 17-70 f/2.8 Di III-A VC RXD. Priced at $800, it’s considerably more affordable than the Sony and also offers image stabilization (the Sony and Sigma do not). 

But the new Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 is considerably smaller and lighter than both of the above. In fact, the Sigma is nearly half the weight of the Tamron: 10.2 ounces, compared to 18.5 ounces (the Sony weighs 17.4 ounces). The Sigma is also 3 inches in length, while the Tamron is 4.7 inches and the Sony is 4 inches. 

For L-mount shooters

There are currently far fewer APS-C L-mount bodies than E-mount. But if you are rocking a Leica T/TL2 and/or Leica CL, this is the only constant aperture standard zoom out there (made for APS-C). 

Will it be available for other APS-C mounts? 

In the past, Sigma has offered their other DC DN lenses for Canon EF-M and Micro Four Thirds cameras. No word yet on whether the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 will also be available in those mounts. 

Optical construction and aperture 

The Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8’s optical construction consists of 13 elements in 10 groups with three aspherical elements and one low dispersion element. To keep the size of the lens down, Sigma is relying on in-camera lens corrections to “further eliminates optical imperfections such as distortion and vignetting.”

It also makes use of Sigma’s Super Multi-layer coating, which will likely help keep instances of ghosting and lens flares to a minimum. And a 7-blade rounded diaphragm should produce bokeh that is “smooth and attractive,” says Sigma.

Build quality

The housing of the lens is constructed using a mix of polycarbonate composite materials and metal, to keep the size, weight, and presumably the cost down. That said, the lens mount is brass. 

Autofocus and close-focus 

Autofocus is driven by a stepping motor, which should result in silent and zippy AF acquisitions, whether capturing stills or video. And the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 offers an impressively close-focus distance of just under 5 inches. 

Price, availability and accessories 

The Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN Contemporary lens will be available at the end of October for $549 and ships with a Petal Type Hood (LH582-02), shown in most of the photos above.

Sigma has announced the new Sigma 18-50mm F2.8 DC DN Contemporary lens, Sigma’s first mirrorless zoom lens for crop sensor cameras. The lens gives an equivalent range of 27-75mm, in an ultra small and lightweight body. The lens has a maximum magnification of 1:2.8 allowing a minimum focus distance of 12.1cm.

Available in L and E-Mount, the lens can be used on full-frame cameras with crop mode enabled. It would make an ideal lens choice for the smaller L-Mount cameras such as the Leica CL, and small E-Mount cameras, such as the Sony Alpha A6600.

The lens is made up of 13 elements in 10 groups, with a 7-blade rounded diaphragm, and a 55mm filter thread. The lens weighs less than 300g at 290g, and will be availble from 29th October 2021, with a price of £429.99.

Comparing the Sigma 56mm f/1.4 to Four Fast Manual Prime Lenses

Autofocus was one hell of a quality-of-life upgrade in photography, but it’s not always necessary. In this video, see a comparison of one fast autofocus prime with four fast manual focus primes to see how they hold up.

By the time I had taken up photography, autofocus was about as staple as it could get. There was plenty of vintage glass you could get with manual focus, but anything new or even recent had AF built-in. However, my propensity for vintage glass had me using manual focus from quite early on in my career and I got used to it. While I would always reach for an AF lens in most scenarios, there are plenty of slower, controlled shoots where manual lenses work just fine.

Since I started, there has been a gradual incline on the number of new, manual focus lenses for sale. I wouldn’t have predicted that, but it seems many of the peripheral brands that produce only lenses figured out that they can create fast glass for a fraction of the price if they forgo AF. This has led to a wealth of manual lenses on the market and I have several of them.

While they don’t work in all scenarios, I use my manual focus lenses on most shoots and there are several I reach for regularly. For example, on my Fujifilm GFX 50R my go-to lens, in general, is manual focus, the Mitakon Zhongyi Speedmaster 65mm f/1.4. This video is an interesting comparison of how they all fare, though it’s worth noting that you don’t always have to shoot wide-open. Part of the benefit of having a lens that’s as quick as f/0.95 is that you can shoot as wide as f/1.2 and increase the sharpness.

That said, there is no denying the Sigma 56mm f/1.4 is a superb lens and great value too!

A good 24-70mm f/2.8 lens is the workhorse of choice for a huge range of photographers and filmmakers, offering a versatile focal length range and a wide aperture suitable for a lot of uses and applications, though they are not always cheap. Sigma’s 28-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Contemporary lens offers impressive image quality and performance in a small package and at quite an affordable price, and this great video review takes a look at just what you can expect from it. 

Coming to you from Andreas1701, this excellent video review takes a look at the Sigma 28-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Contemporary lens. Though you lose 4mm on the wide end, this lens still offers impressive performance in a lightweight package and at a very reasonable price. It comes with a variety of features, including:

Sigma Says Its Foveon Sensor Camera Is Still Underway and Fujifilm Lenses Are a Genuine Possibility

In 2020, Sigma announced the disappointing news that its work on a groundbreaking Foveon sensor was delayed indefinitely. However, in a recent interview, Sigma’s CEO has said that work is underway, having restarted the project from scratch.

In a broad-ranging interview with filmmaker Johnnie Behiri of YouTube channel CineD, Sigma CEO Kazuto Yamaki confirmed that the manufacturer had previously been forced to abandon the project completely and start over, and while it seems that there are still problems to solve, Sigma is still hard at work attempting to bring it to market.

Rather than photosites sitting behind a color filter array — a mosaic of red, green, and blue — and each recording the luminosity value for one of the three colors, the pixels in a Foveon sensor can capture full color. Three photodiodes are stacked, each tuned to red, green, or blue, therefore removing the need to demosaic the data from the sensor in order to calculate which colors the camera is seeing.

In other significant news, Yamaki confirmed that it is aware of the demand for Sigma to make lenses for Fujifilm cameras and the company is now “seriously thinking about it.”

Sigma fans have multiple options at the 24mm focal length, both offering the traditional Sigma blend of image quality and prices that undercut first-party options. The 24mm f/2 DG DN Contemporary and the 24mm f/3.5 DG DN Contemporary offer different user experiences depending on your priorities, and this excellent video comparison will help you choose which is right for you. 

Coming to you from Tom Calton, this great video compares the Sigma 24mm f/2 DG DN Contemporary lens to the 24mm f/3.5 DG DN Contemporary. Both lenses are priced quite decently, though they serve different purposes. The f/2 version offers a decently wide maximum aperture for low-light work or relatively narrow depth of field, but on the other hand, the f/3.5 version is significantly more portable, with an impressively small footprint and very light weight (just 7.9 oz or 223 g). An aperture of f/3.5 is certainly a bit narrow compared to the majority of prime lenses, but with the high-ISO capabilities of modern cameras, it is not as limiting as it might have been in the past, and when combined with a lightweight mirrorless body like the a7C, you have a very portable setup. The SIGMA 24mm F2 DG DN | Contemporary, like the SIGMA 35mm F2 DG DN | Contemporary and the SIGMA 65mm F2 DG DN | Contemporary, combines the highest level of optical performance even at its maximum aperture of F2 and a well-balanced body.
The lens uses two SLD glass elements and one FLD glass element to correct axial chromatic aberration, which is a particular concern with bright lenses. It also incorporates two high-precision glass-molded aspherical elements, made possible by the processing technology of SIGMA’s sole production facility in Aizu. This has enabled the total number of lens elements to be kept down and the size and weight of the lens to be reduced, while providing excellent correction of various aberrations.
In anticipation of wide-angle lens applications, SIGMA’s optical designers have ensured the lens resolution is extremely high, and is uniform from the center to the periphery of the image. Sagittal coma flare is also well suppressed, giving the lens a high degree of rendering power that makes it ideal for night sky photography.

Sigma Unveils 24mm F2 and 90mm F2.8 Lenses

Sigma just announced two new full-frame prime lenses for mirrorless cameras: the Sigma 24mm F2 DG DN Contemporary and the 90mm F2.8 DG DN Contemporary lenses. Both new Sigma lenses will be available in L-mount and Sony E-mount versions and will sell for $639 each.

The Sigma 24mm F2 DG DN Contemporary and the 90mm F2.8 DG DN Contemporary lenses will go on sale at the end of September 2021. The two new lenses are part of Sigma’s “I Series” line, which are distinguished by their all-metal bodies, metal internal parts and metal lens hoods. All I Series lenses feature a manual aperture ring and knurled surfaces for a better grip.

“Sigma I series lenses are compact, stylish prime lenses,” Sigma said in a press announcement this morning. “Featuring machined metal barrels and lens hoods, manual aperture rings, and magnetic lens caps, the I series are high-performance lenses that pair perfectly with modern mirrorless cameras. The I series was first announced on December 1, 2020, and these two lenses expands the line to six.”

Sigma has introduced two new lenses, the 24mm F2 DG DN and 90mm F2.8 DG DN, designed specifically for full-frame mirrorless cameras, and available in L-Mount and E-Mount. They are both part the the I series, which is Sigma’s range of premium compact primes for mirrorless cameras.

Both lenses offer an all-metal body, and have been designed to work with ultra-high-resolution cameras, for example the 61MP Sigma fp L and Sony Alpha A7R IV.

The Sigma 24mm F2 DG DN lens is a wide-angle lens with a bright F2 aperture, and has been designed to give excellent image quality, whilst also being compact and portable. The lens features 9 rounded aperture blades, and weighs 365g. The lens measures 70mm (diameter) x 72mm (length), and supports 62mm filters.

Sigma say the lens will be ideal for use in night sky photography, events and interiors, with special attention made to supress sagittal coma flare.

The lens is made up of 13 elements in 11 groups, with 1 FLD, 2 SLD and 2 aspherical lens elements. The Sigma 24mm F2 DG DN is provided with a magnetic metal lens cap, a petal-type lens hood, as well as front and rear caps.

The Sigma 90mm F2.8 DG DN lens is a mid-telephoto lens with an F2.8 aperture, manual aperture ring, and is designed to be a compact and portable prime lens, weighing just 295g. The lens measures 64mm (diameter) x 59.7mm (length) and uses a 55mm filter.

Sigma say the lens offers stunning optical performance, with “rich, smooth bokeh” making it perfect for portraits, close-ups, weddings and events. The lens has a minimum focusing distance of 50cm and a maximum magnification ratio of 1:5.

The lens is made up of 11 elements in 10 groups, with 5 SLD elements, and 1 aspherical lens element. The 90mm F2.8 DG DN is provided with a magnetic metal lens cap, lens hood, plus front and rear caps.

Both the Sigma 24mm F2 and Sigma 90mm F2.8 lenses feature internal focus, and weather-sealing to make them dust and splash resistant, as well as a manual aperture ring close to the camera body, with the focus ring towards the front of the lens. There’s also a large AF/MF switch on the side of the lens.

They will be available for £549.99 and available to puchase on the 24 September 2021.

The two new lenses introduced today bring the total number of Sigma I series lenses up to 6, joining the Sigma 24mm F3.5 DG DN, 35mm F2 DG DN, 45mm F2.8 DG DN, and 65mm F2 DG DN.
