When you need to travel with a lot of kit, roller cases can be a great solution. Most of those designed for photographers take the form of upright, front-opening suitcases, but the Vanguard Veo Select 42T is rather different. It adopts a lower pilot-case style design, has a second top opening for quick access to your kit, employs four wheels rather than two, and comes with a detachable shoulder strap.
Measuring 45.5cm in height, 42cm across and 25cm deep, this case is designed to meet carry-on limits, at least for the more generous airlines. Its four-wheel design lets you keep it close beside you while walking, but means you don’t get quite as much carrying capacity as 2-wheel case of the same size. Even so, its 37cm x 33cm x 16cm internal space will swallow a substantial amount of kit.
The Vanguard Veo Select 42T will accommodate a decent quantity of kit, including two cameras and long telephoto lenses
Vanguard Veo Select 42T key features:
Shoulder strap This offers ample adjustment and has a thick shoulder pad, but there’s nowhere specific to stow it in the bag
Tripod holder A foldaway ‘bucket’ style holder is found on one side, with the tripod secured by a second strap. Alternatively, one can be strapped on top
Handle The sturdy four-section telescopic handle reaches a height of over a metre and is released by a push-button lock
Rain cover A separate waterproof cover is included, but it’s an extremely tight fit and can’t be used with the shoulder strap
One major selling point is that the bag will accept two gripped full-frame cameras side-by-side. It’s also deep enough to take sizeable telephoto lenses. You can fit in a good array of extra lenses, too, along with other accessories such as flashguns, chargers and hard drives.
There’s plenty of scope for rearranging the dividers to accommodate your kit, or to fit in personal items alongside. In the fold-down front lid you’ll find a dual slip pocket that’ll hold a 15in laptop (or 16in MacBook Pro) and a large tablet. There are also a couple of large flat pockets inside the top lid, but no other internal organisation.
The Veo Select 42T will hold two gripped full-frame mirrorless or DSLR cameras
Various neat touches are dotted around the bag. The front flap has adjustable straps to limit how far it will fold down, and like the top opening, it’s secured by a lockable dual-pull zip. On the back, there’s a business card-sized window for your contact details. A tripod holder on one side can be stowed away when not in use, while a stretchy water bottle pocket is found on the other.
As we’ve come to expect from Vanguard, the bag is made to an impressively high standard, with plenty of padding to protect your valuable kit. The telescopic handle feels nice and robust, and the wheels roll and rotate smoothly. Both the shoulder strap pad and the top carrying handle are large and well-padded, making it comfortable to handle fully-laden.
The ability to haul the bag over your shoulder when necessary is useful, for example when you need to lug your kit across uneven ground. Just be aware that the bag is somewhat on the large side to do this regularly. It’s also much more comfortable to carry with the handle on the outside, rather then pressing up against your side or back.
Alternative Vanguard Veo Select wheeled models
The Vangaurd Veo Select 59T (right) and 55BT (left) are larger wheeled bags that convert into backpacks.
Vanguard also makes a couple of larger roller cases in the Veo Select range, both of which convert to backpacks. The main difference between them is that the 55BT has four wheels and costs £239.99, while the 59T (£249.99 ) has two. Like the 42T, they’re available in either black or green.
Vanguard Veo Select 42T: Our Verdict
The Vanguard Veo Select 42T is one of the most affordable roller cases available, but it doesn’t feel in any way cheap. This is a good-sized and well-designed bag with plenty of neat touches. It’s a great option for the travelling photographer.
Vanguard has introduced a new line-up of accessories that can be used to extend the role of a tripod, turning it into a lighting stand, microphone boom and monitor stand with their new VEO Tripod Support EcoSystem.
The VEO Tripod Support EcoSystem features tripod support arms, cold shoe mounts and a tablet connector meaning photographers no longer need to lug around multiple tripods.
As more tripods introduce the side mount thread onto the tripod canopy, or even on selected quick release plates such as the QS-72T that comes with the VEO 3T Travel Tripod, there is the option to add accessories to a tripod. To support this, Vanguard has introduced the VEO TSA Tripod Support Arms.
VEO TSA DLX models incorporate a choice of 1/4” or 3/8” threads, a flat or bayonet plate, ball joints at each end and a serrated steel joint while the VEO TSA models are simpler, lighter solutions with a 1/4” thread with a 1/4” to 3/8” adaptor.
To add accessories to your camera flash hot shoe, Vanguard introduces a range of VEO Cold Shoe Mounts. All the models also include a hole for a 1/4” thread on the base and so can be used with the VEO TSA Tripod Support Arms.
At a basic level, the VEO CSM Cold Shoe Mount is an aluminium cold shoe mount that simply attaches your accessory while the VEO CSM DLX Cold Shoe Mount allows you to adjust the vertical angle +90° to -90°. It also includes a magnetic quick release system that allows you to fit your accessory in seconds, or attach it to any suitable metallic surface.
For those with multiple accessories, Vanguard has introduced the VEO CSMM2 and VEO CSMM3 Cold Shoe Multi-Mounts. The VEO CSMM2 Cold Shoe Multi-Mount allows up to two cold shoe-mounted accessories to be fitted, on a bar that allows them to be up to 208mm apart while the VEO CSMM3 Cold Shoe Mult-Mount allows up to three cold shoe-mounted accessories to be fitted, and the two outer mounts allow you to adjust the horizontal angle +90° to -90°. While it does not have a cold shoe mount base, it has a 1/4” thread and so can be attached to either.
For those who want to enlarge their shots before dismantling their setup, Vanguard introduces the heavy-duty VEO TC M that will allow them to add any tablet up to 220mm wide (connections to the camera not provided).
The VEO TC M Tablet Connector can attach to a 1/4” thread from a support arm (or any tripod head using the quick release plate), or directly to any Arca compatible tripod head. To add additional accessories there is a cold shoe mount on the top, and slots for two 1/4” tripod support arms.
Vanguard has introduced a new VEO MT-12 Multi-Mount and Horizontal Arm that photographers can attach to their existing tripod to expand its functionality.
The arm, which is 65cm long, will fit onto any tripod with a 1/4″ or 3/8″ thread, allowing the photographer to add up to four accessories. After attaching the VEO MT-12 to the tripod, the centre of the aluminium bar can be adjusted to the left or right and on either end is a reversible 3/8″ to 1/4″ thread to attach two more accessories or tripod heads, with grub screws that can be used to ensure a secure fit.
In addition to the bar, Vanguard includes two VEO+ MA1 adaptors that can hold an accessory direct on a 1/4” thread, or using a tripod head for more control, and can be moved to the left or right with ease to position the accessory (or additional camera) perfectly for the shot.
VEO MT-12 Multi-Mount and Horizontal Arm Specification:
65cm long aluminium alloy bar
Mounting plate at each end with reversible 3/8” to 1/4” thread
The Vanguard VEO 3T 265HCBP Carbon Fibre Travel Tripod has really impressed us. Not only is it a tripod for photographers, but it’s also a support vloggers and smartphoneographers will love to use, too.
Bluetooth remote trigger
Great build quality
Smartphone connector included
Leg converts to a monopod
A quick-release plate that fits smartphones
Removable telescopic panhandle
We’ll let you know if we think of any!
The Vanguard VEO 3T 265HCBP Carbon Fibre Travel Tripod is a travel tripod with a difference because, as well as using it the traditional way with a mirrorless camera or DSLR, it can also be used for vlogging/video with a smartphone/camera as it comes with a clever quick release plate that’s been adapted for use with smartphones. The Vanguard VEO 3T 265HCBP is priced at £269.99 and we’ve been putting it to the test to find out how versatile it really is and if it’s worth the cash.
Vanguard VEO 3T 265HCBP Carbon Fibre Travel Tripod Features
The Vanguard VEO 3T 265HCBP Carbon Fibre Travel Tripod has been designed with the traditional style of photographer in mind along with smartphoneographers who want to shoot video or long exposure shots with their devices. It’s also perfect for vloggers who want to shoot photos or videos with either a digital camera or a smartphone. Why? Well, alongside all of the usual features we expect to see on a Vanguard tripod, the VEO 3T 265HCBP features a quick-release plate that can fit any smartphone up to 85mm wide, a removable panhandle that helps with smooth panning.
As well as using it as a tripod, the Vanguard VEO 3T 265HCBP transforms into a monopod and it’s constructed from carbon fibre so it’s lightweight, weighing just under 2KG. It’s also compact, measuring 44cm when folded so it easily fits in its supplied tripod bag on even into a backpack.
Other features include a full-height extension of 166cm, 12KG payload, a Bluetooth remote control so you can use the centre column/monopod when vlogging, easy clean leg locks, optional spikes, a VEO BP-120T Arca compatible ball head and a low angle/macro shooting option.
5-section carbon fibre travel tripod
Folded length 44cm
Max height of 166cm
12Kg load capacity
VEO BP-120T Arca compatible ball head
Separate pan lock
Quick-release plate that can hold a smartphone up to 85mm wide
A leg that converts to a monopod
Easy to clean twist locks
Includes a Bluetooth remote control for IOS or Android
Low angle/macro shooting with reversible centre column, or using the Low Angle Adaptor included
The Vanguard VEO 3T 265HCBP is a carbon fibre travel tripod and as it folds down to 44cm and weighs just under 2KG, it certainly fits the requirements of a travel tripod that needs to be lightweight and compact. It easily attaches to a backpack and will fit in a carry-on bag or you can store/carry it in its supplied carry bag.
Another bonus of the Vanguard VEO 3T 265HCBP is that it transforms into a monopod so you get two pieces of kit in one which means you have less to pack. It’s also really easy to set up and is ideal for days you don’t want to carry a full tripod around or when you’re visiting locations where tripods will simply take up too much room (or aren’t allowed). Plus, when you combine the centre column/monopod with the supplied Bluetooth remote control, it makes an ideal tool for vloggers who may want to capture footage and/or shoot pieces to camera while on the move. It also means that you can set your smartphone (or camera with Bluetooth) up and actually be in photos with your family rather than behind the camera taking photos.
The max height the tripod can be extended to is 166cm which is fine for most situations and it has a 12KG max payload which with most camera/lens combos only weighing around 2KG (for most people), weight will not be an issue and neither is stability as even at full height, the tripod stood firm. If you do find you need to add weight for more stability, there’s a hook you can hang your camera bag to. When you do need more height, release the 5-section legs top-down as the larger parts of the legs will always give more stability.
To release the leg sections, you use the twist locks which are billed as ‘easy clean’ which is great as when you’re back from the beach, you want to make sure all of the sand and seawater is removed from it. The leg locks are also rubberised which makes them really grippy and easy to turn. Plus, Vanguard has put text on them so you know which way locks and unlocks which is a really simple but useful thing. When you do lock them in place, the legs stay put with no slippage and accidental rotation which is all you can ask for from a good tripod.
At the top of each leg is a lock you can press to adjust the leg angle via a push-button that’s easy to operate and ensures the legs stay in place once an angle is selected. Simply, push and adjust the leg to 20, 50 or 80-degrees.
For those who enjoy macro photography, the central column can be easily reversed or you can lower the tripod using the low angle adaptor feature when you’re photographing things closer to the ground but don’t need to be so close that you need to turn the column upside down.
The included VEO BP-120T Arca compatible ball head operates smoothly and if you’re going to be doing lots of panning of capturing video footage then we do recommend attaching the optional panhandle as it makes panning that bit more effortless and allows for greater control. It’s easy to attach and it’s an excellent addition, particularly the fact that it can be removed so the tripod is easier to store.
The panhandle was also useful when using a smartphone with the Vanguard VEO 3T 265HCBP which you can attach to the tripod via the QS-72T Arca compatible 70mm long quick release plate that has a built-in smartphone adapter that is compatible with smartphones that measure up to 85mm in width. The adapter lifts easily from the quick release plate and the support extends to fit your smartphone securely.
It’s a piece of kit we didn’t think we’d need until we actually used it and we think it’s a genius move on Vanguard’s part as you might not think you need a tripod when capturing images with a smartphone but with more people than ever vlogging, creating content for YouTube and shooting paid-for photos for Instagram, a good support for your smart device is more important than ever. Plus, the fact that you can fold the adapter back into the quick release plate and then attach your DSLR or Mirrorless camera is great and just brilliantly efficient. The QS-72T Arca compatible quick release plate also allows for longer lenses to be used more easily.
If you’re someone who’ll need a microphone, lights etc. on your shoot, you can attach additional support arms to the tripod via one of the 3/8″ threads found on the canopy or via the 1/4″ thread on the side of the Universal Smartphone Connector.
Other features include a choice of Rubber or Anti-Rust Stainless-Steel Spiked Feet that allow for maximum stability on various terrain.
Overall, the whole tripod is built extremely well with Vanguard really thinking about what the modern-day photographer might need to make their photo-taking process more efficient and straightforward. Plus, it’s ergonomic, too, with grippy and large knobs, easy-to-use twist locks and legs that adjust with the simple click of a button. You also get a separate pan-lock for when shooting panoramas and there’s a spirit level to help keeps things straight.
Value For Money
The Vanguard VEO 3T 265HCBP Carbon Fibre Travel Tripod has an RRP of £270 which, for some, might seem like a lot of money to spend on a tripod but it is on par with other tripods out there. You also have to remember that it will probably be a one-time purchase that’ll last you years so use vs pounds spent is worthwhile.
Alternatives from Vanguard include the VEO 3GO Series which are designed to be small/portable and we really liked the VEO 3GO 235CB when we put it to the test, awarding it a ‘Highly Recommended’ accolade. Or, you could look at the VEO 3GO 265HCB which is lighter and shorter when folded but not as versatile. it does come with a smartphone adapter but it’s not built into the quick release plate as it is on the VEO 3T 265HCBP.
Options from other manufactures include the Manfrotto Befree range with the MKBFRC4-BH at £300, the Benro Travel Angel FTA28CV1 priced at £300 and the 3 Legged Thing Albert 2.0 with AirHed pro kit (not just tripod) at £350, or Punks Brian System at £270. All of these tripods are designed to be compact, lightweight and stable but they don’t offer the same flexibility for smartphoneographers and bloggers quite like the Vanguard VEO 3T 265HCBP does.
The Vanguard VEO 3T 265HCBP has impressed us that much, we’re not messing around, we’re instantly awarding it an ‘Editor’s Choice’ accolade.
Not only do you get a carbon fibre travel tripod, but you also get a monopod, an Arca compatible ball-head that can include a removable panhandle and a quick-release plate that can fit any smartphone up to 85mm wide. The flexibility the tripod offers photographers/vloggers/smartphoneographers is excellent with the ability to capture both video and still photos with either a camera or smartphone. Plus, it comes with a Bluetooth trigger and the panhandle you can attach to the tripod makes panning smooth and efficient. Set-up is quick, the tripod is really sturdy in use and once you’re done with it you can fold it back down to its compact state so it stores easily in its supplied carry case or on the side of a camera bag.
Vanguard VEO 3T 265HCBP – we like you a lot.

No need to run out of power when you’re out and about, as these modern and slim backpacks introduce a USB interface port that allows any photographer to charge and use their kit on the go.
Ever been out and about when you notice the battery indicator blinking red and realising you don’t have a backup? Maybe the camera batteries have been running down faster than planned. Or the GPS on your navigation app is devouring the power in your smartphone battery.
With the VEO Adaptor Backpack Series you now have a backup that allows you to connect your device to the power bank(s) of your choice in the top compartment and connect it through an integrated USB-A interface port to your device to keep the power flowing while you go.
In addition, the VEO Adaptor Series delivers everything you’d expect in a high-quality camera bag, and introduces extra wide side access into the line-up, so you have easy access to your kit on “S” models for both left/right-handed photographers. To prevent anyone opening the side pocket without your knowledge, it’s protected on the go. Simply thread the zipper tag through the elasticated loop at the top of the side pocket and it prevents anyone from opening the side pocket without your knowledge. The side flaps also include built in memory card and cable storage to keep you organised on the go. Alternatively there are traditional rear access models capable of holding pro DSLR cameras and multiple lenses, up to 600mm and up to a 16” laptop.
Each model will carry a tripod centrally for optimal balance, with a tripod foot pocket that folds away discreetly when not needed. In addition, a tripod (or bottle) can be carried using either elasticated side pocket.
Despite the slim and modern profile, the VEO Adaptor Series is stuffed with additional storage space. The “S” models feature a daypack section (which can be removed to allow top access), and all models include multiple pockets for cables, SD cards, etc.
To carry the kit in comfort, there is a wide, well padded comfortable harness with an airflow system to stay cool. For longer trips, the harness includes a chest strap and waist strap to spread the load. When not needed, the waist strap can be tucked away to stop it flapping and getting in the way. Constructed with high quality polyester fabric with PU coating, the VEO Adaptor Series delivers enhanced waterproofing, but for wetter days a rain cover is provided, keeping your kit safe and dry, whatever the conditions.
So if you’re looking for a stylish and capable camera backpack with the ability to keep your energy levels up, check out the VEO Adaptor Backpacks and #makeupyourownmind.
